An Endogenous Sex Selection Model and a Test Using the Chinese Census
نویسندگان
چکیده
The parental sex selection behaviour of altruistic parents without gender specific preference in a monogamous marriage market is studied. Using an OLG model with intra-household resource allocation determined by marriage market bargaining, we find that the equlibrium with a balanced male/female ratio is unstable. Depending on the effect of the marriage market sex ratio on intra-household allocation, there exist stable equilibria with unbalanced sex ratios. Specifically, if the marriage market responsiveness elasticity is small enough and males earn more than females, an equilibrium with a male/female birth ratio in excess of one is stable. From that equilibrium, a reduction in the value of a marriage will tend to increase the male/female birth ratio. This foreshadows the result from the extended model in Yang (2013a), where a reduction in the value of a marriage is attributed to China’s one-child policy, which is empirically associated with an increase in the male/female birth ratio. Another empirical implication of the model is the requirement for equilibrium that the marriage market male/female sex ratio has a negative effect on the number of male births. We find empirical support for this proposition in the 2000 Chinese census.

Estimating Optimum Value of Investment and Human Capital in the R&D Sector of Iran Using an Augmented Endogenous Growth Model
This article intends to estimate the optimal value of investment and human capital in R&D sector of Iranian economy using an augmented endogenous growth model. To do so, two issues have been studied. First, an endogenous growth model has been extended to include investment in R&D as an independent variable. In the framework of this model, in order to determine the optimal value of investment an...
متن کاملSon-biased sex ratios in the 2000 United States Census.
We document male-biased sex ratios among U.S.-born children of Chinese, Korean, and Asian Indian parents in the 2000 U.S. Census. This male bias is particularly evident for third children: If there was no previous son, sons outnumbered daughters by 50%. By contrast, the sex ratios of eldest and younger children with an older brother were both within the range of the biologically normal, as were...
متن کاملTesting Several Rival Models Using the Extension of Vuong\'s Test and Quasi Clustering
The two main goals in model selection are firstly introducing an approach to test homogeneity of several rival models and secondly selecting a set of reasonable models or estimating the best rival model to the true one. In this paper we extend Vuong's method for several models to cluster them. Based on the working paper of Katayama $(2008)$, we propose an approach to test whether rival models h...
متن کاملEstimating a dynamic model of sex selection in China.
High ratios of males to females in China, which have historically concerned researchers (Sen 1990), have increased in the wake of China's one-child policy, which began in 1979. Chinese policymakers are currently attempting to correct the imbalance in the sex ratio through initiatives that provide financial compensation to parents with daughters. Other scholars have advocated a relaxation of the...
